Life journey of Dawood Ibrahim (From a Cop son to the 2nd richest and most wanted terrorist in the world)

The second richest criminal in the world (Dawood Ibrahim is estimated to have net worth of $6.7 billion as of May 2015 according to Forbes, Figure of 2023 is not available) and one of India’s Most Wanted Criminal was hospitalized after allegedly being poisoned in Karachi, Pakistan. Reports claim that the 67-year-old underworld figure is in critical condition, and the Pakistani authorities have tightened security around the hospital. According to some reports, Dawood was rushed to the hospital two days ago after one of his men poisoned him

Dawood sits at the top of the largest organized crime syndicate in Southeast Asia, primarily in Dubai, Pakistan, and India. Family Background of Dawood Ibrahim

·        Born On 26 December 1955, in a village in the Ratnagiri district of Maharashtra

·        He was born to a modest Konkani Muslim family with eight brothers and four sisters.

·        His father, Ibrahim Kaskar, was a head constable in the Mumbai Police

·        His mother, Amina, was a homemaker.

·        He was raised in Dongri, a poor, Muslim-dominated part of Central Bombay

·        He attended Ahmed Sailor High School but dropped out

Dawood, aka Sheikh Dawood Hassan, is married to Mehjabeen Shaikh

Together, they have three children but very little is known about their marriage. In 2006, Dawood’s daughter, Mahrukh Ibrahim, married Junaid Miandad, son of Pakistani cricketer Javed Miandad

·        In 2011, his daughter Mehreen married Ayub, a Pakistani-American. The same year, Dawood’s son Moin married Saniya, the daughter of a London-based business tycoon and officially became a maulana in 2017

·        His third daughter Maria died of malaria in Pakistan in 2010.

·        Dawood Ibrahim has married for the second time, this time a Pakistani woman named Maizabin but Sources say he has not yet divorced his 1st wife

·        His sister, Haseena Parker, also known as the ‘Queen of Mumbai’, died of cardiac arrest in 2014.

Criminal Background of Dawood Ibrahim

·         He got into hooliganism and formed his gang of Dongri boys who participated in small-time smuggling and violence

·        At the age of 19 years joined hands with “King of the underworld Haji Mastan 

·        In the 1970s, along with his brother, Shabir Ibrahim Kaskar, he formed the ‘D-Company’ or Dawood Company. Through D-Company, Dawood started gold smuggling, extortion, and drug trafficking. Things were going well until he was wanted by the Mumbai Police for the murder of Samad Khan

·        On 4 December 1974, Dawood committed his first major crime- robbing an astronomical amount of money from the Metropolitan Bank. ( 4,75,000 )

·        He joined the mob in Mumbai under Karim Lala before setting up a multi-billion-dollar criminal enterprise in the ’80s and ’90s, centered around prostitution, gambling and drugs, reports The Guardian

·        In 1986, he fled to Dubai to avoid criminal prosecution 

·        In 1993, he was named by the Indian government as a criminal behind the Mumbai attacks, during which 12 coordinated bombs were detonated across the city killing 25 and Injuring 700 people. The 1993 Mumbai bombings, occurring a year after the Babri Masjid demolition in Ayodhya, propelled Dawood to the topmost wanted lists of the FBI and Interpol.

·        In 2003, the US placed him on the list of global terrorists. Moreover, the US Department of the Treasury Office has forbidden US financial entities from working with him. He has a smuggling route shared with and used by Al-Qaeda, said reports. 

·        He was also suspected to be involved in the 2008 Mumbai attacks, which left more than 170 people dead and 300 people injured. The entire terrorist event was carried out by ten terrorists, and multiple major locations of the city, namely, the Taj Mahal Hotel, Oberoi Trident Hotel, Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, and Nariman House were attacked. Some reports suggest that Dawood provided financial and logistical support to the attackers and helped them escape Mumbai

·        He is also ‘wanted’ in connection with the Pune German Bakery Blast that took place in 2010, killing 17 people and injuring over 60. With a bomb planted in a backpack triggered by a mobile phone, the blast happened at the German Bakery in Koregaon Park, Pune.

·        Dawood Ibrahim was allegedly involved in the murder of Jyotirmoy Dey, a crime journalist, in 2011. Reports say that Dey was killed by the henchmen of Dawood Ibrahim as he wrote about his illegal activities

·        In 2011, Indian intelligence also linked D-Company with the 2G Spectrum scam through a company formerly known as Swan Telecom

·        In 2011, Dawood stood at No. 3 in Forbes’ World’s Top 10 Most Dreaded Criminals list.

·        He expanded to international drug trafficking (mainly heroin to Western Europe, the UK and India with Pakistan as the main source due to its proximity to Afghanistan’s opium fields), 

·        Ventured in cricket betting and match-fixing. To this day, match-fixing remains one of D-Company’s main businesses and gathers approximately $1.8 billion in annual revenue. D-Company was alleged to have been a part of the IPL Spot Fixing Scam in 2013.

  • The list of his criminal activities is endless and thus he has been the most wanted criminal for the last 4 decades. 
  • Mumbai police were cracking down on him. After NIA was formed, NIA has been cracking down on D-company’s terror financing network in Dubai
  • Attached are his properties/aides’ properties under UAPA as ‘proceeds of terrorism’ under Section 25 (1) of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act 1967
  • NIA announced a Rs 25 Lakh reward for Dawood Ibrahim,  
  • The cash rewards assigned to Dawood Ibrahim’s close associates who are also running an international terrorist network — D-Company are –
  • Rs 20,00,000/- for Shakeel Shaikh alias Chhota Shakeel,

  • Interestingly, there is a nationwide disruption in internet services in Pakistan, sparking rumors regarding Dawood’s condition. However, conflicting reports suggest the disruption was due to a political rally by PTI.
  • Sources suggest that Javed Miandad (Pakistan Crickter) family members has been house arrested.
  • Some reports suggest that he has expired between 8 PM to 9 PM IST but there is no official confirmation.  
  • Most reports show that he is in critical condition at a hospital in Pakistan. 
  • The Mumbai Police is trying to get more information about Dawood from his relatives, Sajid Wagle and Alishah Parkar, regarding his hospitalization. We hope to get confirmed news in the next few hours .
